Meet Johnny Curry
Johnny Curry was appointed to the office of Assistant Tax Collector for the Bessemer Division of Jefferson County by Governor Kay Ivey on September 28, 2023. Johnny has been married to the former Mary Gugliotta for 46 years and they have one son, Jay. Johnny was born in Bessemer and lives in Hueytown, where he has resided almost his entire life. He was employed by BellSouth Corporation from 1986 to 2006. Before going on to work at The American Village in Montevallo where he served for 14 years as Special Projects Director.
A life-long Republican, Johnny was first elected to the Alabama House of Representatives at age 30 in 1986, serving 4 terms until retiring from the position in 2002. During his legislative career, he served eight years on the influential Ways and Means Committee that set tax policy and wrote the state budgets. He was the sponsor of the first re-write of Alabama’s Child labor laws in more than 30 years. He sponsored and passed the legislation that funded the creation of The American Village, the unique civic education center that teaches about the founding and history of our American Republic.
Johnny is also a former Chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party. He has been a member of the Alabama Republican Party’s State Executive Committee since 1986. He also serves on the Alabama Historic Ironworks Commission that oversees both Tannehill and Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Parks. While also serving for many years on the Public Foundation Board of Alabama Public Television.
